Munster steadied their Champions Cup campaign with a commanding bonus-point victory over a stubborn Gloucester side, fresh off a four-match winning run. After a heavy loss to Bath in their opener, Munster kept things tight in the first half before pulling clear after the break, the cumulative defensive workload for Gloucester finally taking its toll.
The opening score came from Dan Kelly, Munster’s sole try of the first half, shortly after Gloucester prop Jamal Ford-Robinson was yellow-carded for a dangerous clearout on Jack Crowley. Mike Haley added Munster’s second after the 49th minute, but the real swing came late in the match when Gloucester’s Caio James was sin-binned with 13 minutes remaining, and Munster pounced. Ruadhan Quinn crossed, Tom Farrell followed, and Tadhg Beirne completed the scoring as Munster cemented a deserved win.
Gloucester entered the game on a hot streak, four consecutive victories including a Champions Cup win over Castres the previous week. George Barton’s early third-minute penalty gave them the lead as they frustrated Munster with a stout defensive display through the opening 20 minutes.
Despite the pressure, Munster continued to probe. After Niall Scannell almost found the breakthrough, full-back Mike Haley burst forward and offloaded to Dan Kelly, who reached out to score despite being tackled just short of the line.
Gloucester then went to 14 men in the 32nd minute when Ford-Robinson was sin-binned for an ill-judged attempt to remove Crowley at the breakdown. Crowley lined up the resulting penalty from around 35 metres but missed.
Munster hunted a second try before halftime, applying sustained pressure near Gloucester’s line, but the visitors’ defense held firm as the whistle blew with the scoreline 7-3 in Munster’s favor.
The second half began with Munster in control. A clever one-handed offload from Alex Nankivell found Haley, who sprinted in for a hallmark score and a 12-3 lead. The tempo stayed high, and Gloucester’s resolve was finally cracked when James received a yellow card for killing the ball during a Munster attack near the line, extending Munster’ advantage after 67 minutes.
The decisive blow arrived soon after. A rapid tap penalty allowed Quinn to muscle over for Munster’s third try. Nankivell then showcased his improvisational flair with a deft offload to Farrell for the bonus-point score at 72 minutes. Beirne added a late individual flourish to round off a five-try performance as Munster widened the margin in the closing stages.
Gloucester now switch focus to domestic commitments before returning to European action on 9 January with a trip to Edinburgh, followed by a home clash with Toulon.
Munster’s next European engagement is a visit to Toulon on 11 January, then a home fixture against Castres to close the pool.
