A true music legend, Dave Robinson, at an incredible 82 years old, continues his lifelong dedication to bringing live music to audiences, even in the most challenging circumstances. Robinson, co-founder of Stiff Records, signed iconic acts like Elvis Costello, The Pogues, and Madness, and his impact on the music industry is undeniable.
But here's where it gets controversial... Robinson believes that touring is the key to a band's success and longevity. He argues that it's through the grind of constant performances that bands truly evolve and connect with their audience.
And this is the part most people miss: Robinson's own journey began in the early 1960s when he moved from Ireland to the UK as a photographer. One fateful lunch break led him to Liverpool's Cavern Club, where he captured images of The Beatles, a band he initially thought was just another group copying the era's music.
However, years later, he witnessed the transformative power of touring as he saw footage of The Beatles after their Hamburg days. He realized that it was the relentless touring schedule that had honed their craft and made them the legendary band we know today.
In 1968, Robinson managed Eire Apparent on a U.S. tour with Soft Machine and Jimi Hendrix. This tour, he says, was 'character-forming' due to the challenges of logistics and the unique audience of mostly white college students who had evaded the draft during the Vietnam War.
Fast forward to the present, and Robinson is using his decades of experience to support new bands in Ukraine, a country in dire need of music and hope. Despite the tough conditions and the risks involved, Robinson believes that music is a necessity for Ukraine, especially with many local men fighting on the front lines.
The response from Ukrainian audiences has been overwhelmingly positive, with packed shows and a largely youthful crowd, primarily girls. However, the reality of the war is never far away, with wrecked cars, bombed buildings, and the constant sound of sirens and explosions a stark reminder of the dangers.
Despite falling ill with pneumonia during his tour, Robinson is determined to return and organize more tours in the region. He believes that music is not about suffering or punishment but about bringing joy and a sense of normalcy to those who need it most.
