Egypt is on a mission to strengthen its economic ties with African countries, and it's doing so with a strategic focus on infrastructure and private sector collaboration. Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat revealed this ambitious plan during a meeting with ambassadors from seven African nations. She emphasized that President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi is committed to building a shared economic future with Africa, and joint African action is seen as the key to resolving conflicts and creating a development model based on expertise exchange.
The meeting, held alongside the First Egyptian-African Economic Conference, brought together envoys from Algeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Cameroon, Uganda, and Senegal. The discussions centered around enhancing connectivity through infrastructure, boosting trade and investment, and fostering private sector partnerships. Al-Mashat highlighted the Egyptian private sector's role in continental infrastructure, using the Cairo-Cape Town connectivity project as a shining example.
The government is also prepared to share its expertise in feasibility studies and development finance. Al-Mashat suggested that joint committees could be a powerful tool for strengthening relations, citing the recent Egyptian-Algerian Joint Committee as a successful model for exploring cooperation priorities. In addition to infrastructure, Egypt is keen on leading the green transition. The continent, according to Al-Mashat, has the resources to become a renewable energy hub. Egypt and other African nations are partnering with the World Bank to provide renewable energy access to 300 million people across the continent.
The minister also noted the growing global interest in fostering cooperation with Africa, as evidenced by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) adding Sub-Saharan African countries to its list of operations. To further this mission, the ministry launched a South-South and Triangular Cooperation Strategy in 2024, aiming to expand development solutions and build cross-border partnerships. Al-Mashat characterized this integration as an extension of Egypt's historical role in supporting the continent's interests.
During the meeting, ambassadors proposed exciting initiatives to boost inter-African tourism. They suggested linking Egyptian tourism networks with continental channels to create new routes, such as eco-tourism, and leveraging Egypt's ability to attract foreign visitors to redirect traffic to other African destinations. They also called for increased cooperation in education, health, communications, and knowledge exchange between governmental institutions and the private sector, marking a comprehensive approach to strengthening Africa's economic ties.
