Google Wallet's latest innovation aims to revolutionize travel experiences, but will it succeed in easing our travel-related headaches? The battle for convenience is on!
Google's annual I/O event showcased a range of AI-centric announcements, including a new feature for Google Wallet. The Nearby Passes notifications aim to provide users with timely updates based on their location and saved passes. This feature is now being introduced, along with check-in alerts for upcoming flights, to make travel less stressful.
Here's how it works: when users open an existing pass, they'll be prompted to 'Set up nearby notifications.' In a related development, Wallet has been rolling out a 'Check in to your flight' notification, which sources flight details from Gmail. This notification conveniently displays the flight's destination and airline.
But here's where it gets interesting: Google plans to expand this feature beyond just boarding passes. Nearby passes notifications will also work with event tickets, loyalty cards, and offers. Imagine walking into a venue and having your loyalty card or event ticket automatically pop up on your screen, no app searching required! This feature, however, requires users to grant the Wallet app access to their location at all times, which might raise some privacy concerns.
Google Wallet also allows users to customize notifications for each pass, ensuring control over what appears in their notification center. This feature is expected to be widely available, so if you haven't seen it yet, a simple app update or restart might do the trick.
In addition, Google Wallet is addressing another travel-related pain point by introducing an Express Transit Card feature. This will enable users to dedicate a specific credit/debit card for transit payments, separate from their tap-to-pay card. A much-needed upgrade, as the current process of unlocking the device and switching payment methods is cumbersome. However, Google is playing catch-up here, as Apple and Samsung have already implemented similar features.
While the nearby notifications feature is rolling out, the release date for the updated transit payment system remains a mystery, leaving users curious and eager for more.
